Rose blossom harvest has begun. Later on, when the harvest reaches its maximum, also the flowers will be picked up. But for the time being, are thousands and thousands the blossoms which are picked up manually by Agronatura staff to be dried. Then, in a few days, also the rose open blossoms will be harvested to get Centifoglia rose water and Damask rose essential oil. It is necessary to pass through the plants every day and pick up the flowers which are ready, the next day it could be too late, because roses have already started fading. It is always such a great beauty to be surrounded by the color and the fragrance of the roses!!!
E' iniziata la raccolta dei boccioli di rosa. Più avanti, nel pieno della raccolta, si raccoglieranno anche i fiori. Ma per il momento, sono a centinaia boccioli che ogni giorno vengono raccolti dallo staff di Agronatura per essere essiccati. Fra qualche giorno, invece, si passerà alla raccolta dei boccioli aperti che verranno poi distillati e con i quali si otterrà l'idrolato di rosa (acqua di rose) dalla rosa centifoglia e l'olio essenziale dalla rosa damascena.E' necessario passare tutti i giorni tra le piante e raccogliere i fiori pronti, perchè se il fiore venisse dimenticato, il giorno dopo sarebbe già sfiorito e quindi non più utlizzabile. E' comunque sempre un incanto essere circondati dal colore e al profumo delle rose!!!

Roses are blooming in this period of the year. It is so wonderful to stop and look at the fileds full of roses. For the Agronatura people this moment will soon turn in very hard work. The harvest of roses is done by hand picking each signle rose at a time. A very exausting job starting at 6 a.m. and going on until dark, a job where tiredness and backache will surely be felt by all group of people involved in the picking...However for the time being, just enjoy the beauty of these precious flowers which never stop of suprising us all!
In questo periodo dell'anno le rose stanno sbocciando ed è bellissimo fermarsi ad osservare i campi fioriti. Per gli agricoltori di Agronatura questo momento si trasformerà presto in duro lavoro, in quanto la raccolta viene effettuata a mano rosa per rosa. Un lavoro estenuante dalle 6 di mattina fino a tarda sera, dove la fatica e il mal di schiena si faranno senz'altro sentire. Ma per il momento, godiamoci la bellezza di questi fiori preziosi che non smettono mai di incantarci!

In these days the rain is arrived, there was such a great need for it! Now the taking roots of the rose and lavender plants planted at the beginning of March till a few days ago (more than 40 hectares in total) is assured. Because of the rain, works in the fields are suspended, but not the work of the Agronatura men. Infact, they are making the maintenance of the transplanter machines and some modifications to simplify the transplanting operation. Just waiting for the sun forecasted for the next few days, when everyone will start working outside again.
In questi giorni è arrivata la pioggia, ce n'era veramente bisogno. Ora l'attecchimento delle piantine di rose e lavanda piantate dall'inizio di marzo fino ad alcuni giorni fa (oltre 40 ettari in tutto) è certamente assicurato. I lavori nei campi sono sospesi per la pioggia, ma non il lovoro dei ragazzi di Agronatura. Infatti in questi giorni stanno facendo la manutenzione delle trapiantatrici e alcune modifiche per agevolare le operazioni di trapianto. In attesa del sole previsto per i prossimi giorni, quando si tornerà tutti a lavorare all'aperto.

We have started the transplanting of the roses (rosa centifolia - may rose). The planting system is 2,50 m between the lines and 50 cm between the plants in the line. The ground has been prepared and fertilized with dung before winter; then after an intervention of precision work, the plan of the lines is made and the holes are dug or a furrow with a plough is drawn and it has become a home for the plants of roses. These are days of intensive work for Anna, Renato, Alessandro and Benedetta, obliged in their farms with the transplanting of thousands of roses. In approximately ten days if it doesn't rain we have to intervene with rescue irrigations to fascilitate the taking roots.
Abbiamo iniziato il trapianto delle rose (rosa centifolia - may rose). Il sesto d'impianto è di 2,5 metri tra le file e 50 cm tra una pianta e l'altra. I terreni sono stati preparati e letamati prima dell'inverno, ora dopo un intervento per la rifinitura, viene fatta la tracciatura delle file e si scavano le buche o si traccia un solco con l'aratro e vengono messe a dimora le piante di rosa. Sono giorni di lavoro intenso per Anna, Renato, Alessandro e Benedetta, impegnati nelle loro aziende con il trapianto di migliaia di rose. Tra dieci giorni circa se non piove dovremo intervenire con un irrigazione di soccorso per facilitare l'attecchimento.

We are in a lavender officinalis field of about 4 hectares in Castelletto d’Erro. The cultivation has been planted in spring 2011; as you can see the growth of the weed has started very early. After a passage of the “estirpartore” between the lines it is necessary to eliminate the weeds from the row and to move the ground with a hoe. It is a very hard work but important. To keep the ground free of weeds means less competition with the lavender plants which can grow healthy and strong and can arrive first closing down the row. When lavender plants form a sort of thick and united hedge (usually from the third year onwards) it slightly reduces the number of the manual interventions. In the second year you can harvest some flowers usually by hand, then in the third year you can start to harvest by machine.
Siamo in un campo di lavanda officinalis di circa 4 ettari a Castelletto d’Erro. La coltura è stata impiantata nella primavera 2011; come si può vedere la crescita delle erbacce è iniziata molto presto. Dopo il passaggio dell’estirpatore tra le file, occorre eliminare le erbe infestanti sulla fila e smuovere il terreno con la zappa. E’ un lavoro molto duro ma importante, mantenere libero il terreno dalle infestanti significa meno competizione con le piante di lavanda che possono svilupparsi sane e robuste ed arrivare prima alla chiusura sulla fila. Quando le piante di lavanda formano una specie di siepe fitta e unita (di solito dal 3° anno in poi), diminuisce leggermente il numero degli interventi manuali. Al 2° anno si può già raccogliere qualche fiore, di solito la raccolta si fa a mano; poi dal 3° anno in avanti si raccoglie a macchina.

February: In the biodynamic calender it is time for pruning the roses.
It is cold and there is still snow, this year the snow is really abundant. The roses need cold temperatures and a good cut. Anna and Piercarlo have started the pruning which wil need 10 days. They must use thick gloves and must be careful with the thorns. The air is clear, cold and full with hope: the hope of a season reach of flowers and a great fragrance, the one of Damascena Roses.

Per il calendario biodinamico ora è il momento adatto per la potatura delle rose. Fa freddo e c’è ancora un po’ di neve; quest’anno la neve è stata abbondante. Le rose hanno bisogno di freddo e di una giusta potatura. Anna e Piercarlo hanno iniziato la potatura che durerà circa 10 giorni. Bisogna usare guanti spessi e fare attenzione alle spine. L’aria che si respira è pulita, fredda e piena di speranza: di una stagione ricca di fiori e del meraviglioso profumo delle rose damascene.
